These past months amid the COVID-19 pandemic has been especially hard on India; it has become the epicenter of the pandemic after hitting case records for days on a row and its health system is on the verge of collapsing. Hospitals are running out of beds, crematoriums are running day and night, and there is a shortage of oxygen, hospital beds, and medicine.

Oxygen concentrators, which is a medical device that concentrates oxygen from ambient air, are especially sought after in the country to maintain adequate oxygen supply for sick patients. India’s hacker and maker community have come up with an idea to fight the pandemic with engineering, and a group, Maker's Asylum Foundation, aims to start producing the established open-source OxiKit oxygen concentrator using locally manufactured parts. They've also launched a fundraiser to cover the development, prototyping, and certification work.
